Cyril Ramaphosa announces R1 billion flood assistance allocation for KZN

President Cyril Ramaphosa reveals that over R1 billion would be allocated to flood relief in KwaZulu-Natal.

The floods impacted around 13 593 houses and 40 723 individuals, killing at least 395 people, 355 of them were in the eThekwini metro.

The following is a breakdown of how the funds will be raised and spent:

Flood assistance will be funded with R152 million from the National Housing Finance Corporation’s Residential Rent Relief;

R100 million from the Residential Rent Relief Grant of the Social Housing Regulatory Authority;

R45 million for 80 freshwater tankers to replace the water tankers in the three municipalities hit by the drought;

For the 2020/21 financial year, the Community Schemes Ombud Service (CSOS) will contribute around R30 million of the remaining preserved surplus.
